What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot
You've booked your maternity photography session and now comes the question every expecting mum asks: what on earth do I wear?
And it’s a good question. What you wear plays a big role in how you feel during your shoot – and how your images turn out. But don’t stress. The best outfits aren't about finding something trendy or expensive. They're about feeling comfortable, confident, and authentically you.
The first thing to know is that you have options: I offer both outdoor maternity shoots and studio maternity shoots. Your wardrobe can (and should) shift slightly depending on the setting and the style of images you’re drawn to.
Here's everything you need to know to nail your wardrobe for the day.
Top Tips on What to Wear During a Maternity Photoshoot
Choose Something You Feel Good In
Pregnancy already asks a lot of your body, so the last thing you need is a dress that’s too tight, straps that dig into your skin, or fabric that makes you overheat. If you feel uncomfortable in your outfit, it’s likely going to show in your pictures.
For outdoor sessions, I often recommend soft, breathable fabrics that move easily.
For studio sessions, comfort still matters — but the goal is often more about form, shape, and clean lines (rather than soft, floaty movement).
Flowing gowns, fitted knit dresses, wrap styles, or simple, well-cut silhouettes all work beautifully. But if comfort for you is denim jeans and a white shirt unbuttoned to gently show off your belly, that works perfectly too. Beautiful lingerie can be stunning for studio sessions, and a bikini works wonderfully for beach shoots. The goal is to highlight your bump in a way that feels natural, without feeling restricted or uncomfortable.
If you’re not sure what will suit your session best, we’ll talk it through beforehand and choose options that match the look you want to create.
Something That Shows Off Your Bump
Comfort comes first because you are the star of the show. But after comfort, one of the next things to look for is showing off your bump with clothes that define your silhouette.
Very loose clothing can sometimes hide your shape, especially on camera. Instead, we recommend styles that skim your body or softly contour around your belly. And fitted doesn’t have to mean tight, it simply means structured enough to show your natural curves.
If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to guide you. Before your session, I’ll discuss styling with you fully so you feel clear and confident about what to wear. I also offer access to a carefully curated wardrobe of timeless maternity pieces that photograph beautifully.
Think About Fabric, Shape and the Feel of Your Session
The way fabric moves and catches light makes a real difference in your images.
For outdoor maternity shoots, lightweight materials like chiffon, soft tulle, and jersey can create beautiful movement — especially if there’s a breeze. Textured fabrics like lace or knits can also add depth and visual interest.
For studio maternity shoots, styling is often more sculptural. Pieces that hold their shape—sleek dresses, fitted sets, bodysuits, lingerie, or structured silhouettes — photograph beautifully and help highlight your bump and curves in a clean, timeless way.
I also have an array of studio fabrics available that we can drape and shape over your body during the session. These can be wrapped, sculpted, and even tossed to create striking shape and movement in a controlled way — without relying on windy outdoor conditions. If you love that elevated, editorial look, this is a beautiful option.
Hair, Makeup & Finishing Touches
Professional hair and makeup can make a big difference in how you feel during your session. It’s not about looking “done up”, but to help you feel polished and confident. I can recommend trusted artists if you’d like.
Consider your jewellery as well. Delicate pieces always photograph beautifully, but a thoughtfully chosen statement piece can look incredible — especially in studio sessions where styling details really shine.
When to Book Your Maternity Photoshoot
If you’re wondering when to book your maternity photography session, most clients schedule between 30 and 36 weeks. That’s usually when your bump is beautifully round, but you’re still feeling mobile and comfortable.
I recommend choosing your outfit at least a week or two before your shoot. Try everything on properly: sit, stand, move around. Make sure you feel at ease. The more relaxed you are, the more natural your images will feel.
And remember, you don’t have to figure it out alone. We’ll always chat beforehand about your vision, your comfort, and the look you’re going for.
Still Unsure? Just Ask!
I help my clients with outfit planning all the time. If you’ve booked in your session and are stuck between options, send me a photo, and I'll give you my honest opinion. I want you to walk into your session feeling amazing.
