When Is The Best Time For A Maternity Photography Session?

Pregnancy is a whirlwind, both emotionally and physically. One moment you’re getting used to the idea of becoming a parent, and the next, you’re feeling that baby bump grow by the day. It’s a journey full of change, and a chapter worth capturing. That’s where maternity photography comes in.

So the big question is: When’s the best time to book a maternity photoshoot? While there’s no perfect time for everyone, there is a sweet spot, and it can make all the difference in how you feel and how your images turn out.

The Ideal Timeframe: 28 to 34 Weeks

The best time for a maternity photography session is usually between 28 and 34 weeks into your pregnancy. By this stage, your bump has a gorgeous, round shape that photographs beautifully, and you’re likely still feeling mobile, comfortable, and confident enough to enjoy the session.

Of course, every pregnancy is different. If you’re showing earlier or feeling amazing well into your 36th or 37th week, we can absolutely tailor the timing to suit you.

Why Timing Matters in Maternity Photography

Just as with newborn photography, timing your maternity shoot is about striking the right balance of comfort, aesthetics, and logistics. A well-timed maternity session gives us the chance to capture not just your bump, but your connection to the moment, the anticipation, the strength, the joy, and perhaps even the challenges

It also gives us the flexibility to plan our session with intention. Whether you're envisioning an outdoor golden hour shoot or a relaxed, studio-style session, booking early means we have the time to style it properly and reschedule if needed due to weather or availability.

Can You Book Earlier or Later?

Absolutely. There’s no “wrong” time to take maternity photos.

Some women start showing earlier and want to document the journey as it unfolds, especially with second or third pregnancies. Others feel their best in the early weeks and would rather avoid the discomfort that can appear in the final trimester. And if you're already at 35 or 36 weeks and wondering if it's too late? It’s not.

We’ll work with whatever stage you're at. My role is to help you feel supported and beautiful, regardless of how far along you are. Whether we capture you glowing at 30 weeks or standing strong at 38, what matters most is creating honest, heartfelt images that feel like you.

Booking Ahead = Less Stress, More Style

To make the most of your maternity photography session, I recommend booking in during your second trimester. Not only does this give us more availability to lock in your preferred date, but it also allows time to plan your session details, such as wardrobe, location, and the overall vibe.

And if you're thinking about a newborn photoshoot too, booking both sessions in one go helps ensure your spot in advance (especially since newborn sessions are time-sensitive). Many of my clients choose to combine maternity and newborn photography in Melbourne into a full story of this exciting time.

Your Comfort Comes First

As someone with a background in physiotherapy, I bring more than just a camera to the session. I bring a deep understanding of how to make your body feel supported, safe, and relaxed, especially during pregnancy.

Every pose is guided gently. We take breaks when needed. The session moves at your pace, not mine. Whether we’re photographing outdoors or in my Brighton portrait studio, my goal is to help you feel radiant, even if it’s just for the 60 minutes we spend together.

It’s Not About Perfection – It’s About Presence

Maternity photography isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about celebrating your strength, your transformation, and the new life growing inside you.
