Meet one of Australia’s most respected economists. Embracing philosophy, culture and politics, he is putting his own spin on global economics.

When I had the opportunity to meet Nicholas, the idea was intimidating. What on earth would we talk about? And, more importantly, would I come off like a total goose?

Turns out… absolutely not! Without a hint of any condescension and waving his expressive hands, (with a regular eyebrow raise) we ate lunch. He talked about his passion for his work, the need for societal change and the uphill battle he faces in achieving this.

Nicholas has had a highly successful career in advising the Australian Federal Government on public policy, founding Lateral Economics and much more. His writings and opinions have been published widely in major newspapers and journals including the AFR, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.

As well as being a prolific reader, and an Aussie Rules fan, Nick enjoys Melbourne’s bayside to walk and uses this as deep thinking time.

Using a play on shadow and light and shot in the organised chaos that is Nicholas’ office, the motivation for this project came from Plato’s Cave (yes, I did have to sit down and read up). The idea that if we break free from the chains of habit, ignorance, and unexamined beliefs, we can move through discomfort toward something more truthful really stuck with me. In his own way, perhaps Nicholas hopes to help us all make that journey too.
