Top Questions Melbourne Parents Ask Before Their Newborn Session

Planning a newborn photography session often brings up questions you didn’t expect to be asking.

I've heard them all, and I mean that in the best possible way. Questions mean you're thinking about this with love.

I always try to cover all questions in your booking phone call, however, new questions always pop up. Consider this your no-fuss guide to everything you're probably wondering right now.

When Should We Book?

Earlier than you think. Newborn sessions are best in the first 7–14 days after birth, and that window moves fast, both in terms of availability and how quickly your baby grows.

Most families book after their 20-week scan. I'll pencil in a tentative date around your due date, and closer to the due date we will confirm. For a deeper look at timing, read about when to schedule your newborn session, where I walk you through everything you need to know.

What if My Baby Won't Settle or Sleep?

This is probably the question I get most often, and I always say the same thing: trust the process.

Newborns are unpredictable; that's just the nature of it. Sessions are baby-led, which means, if your baby needs a feed, we will stop and let them feed, if they need comforting, we comfort. Sessions are never rushed..

I've photographed babies who slept the whole way through and babies who had other plans entirely – and we've always come away with something beautiful. You don't need to manage your baby perfectly. That's not your job on the day. Just bring yourself, and let me handle the rest.

Do We Need to Do Anything to Prepare?

Less than you'd think. A warm feed just before we start works wonders, since full, warm babies usually drift off beautifully. Keeping things calm on the morning of the session helps too. Once you book, I'll send through everything you need to know so there are no surprises.

In terms of what to bring, it’s nice and simple — just a few essentials: spare nappies, an outfit change for your baby, a pacifier if your baby uses one, and your own outfit for photos. I provide all props, backdrops, and everything else needed for the session.

If you have a special family heirloom — such as a blanket or toy — that you’d love included, you’re very welcome to bring it along. Just let me know ahead of time so I can plan for it.

But truly? The biggest thing you can do is give yourself permission to relax. When you're at ease, your baby usually is too.

Can We Include Siblings or the Whole Family?

Absolutely. Some of my favourite images come from those in-between moments: a toddler peering curiously at their new sibling, a parent looking down with quiet awe. Those are the ones families treasure most as well.

If you have a toddler joining us, my guide on preparing your toddler for the shoot is well worth a read beforehand. A little preparation goes a long way in making the day smooth and fun for everyone.

Is It Safe for My Baby?

Your baby's safety is always the priority. With my background as a physiotherapist, I bring a genuine understanding of safe positioning, and gentle handling. Every pose is guided thoughtfully, nothing is ever forced, and if something doesn't feel right, we simply don't do it. You will be in a safe, supportive space – and so is your baby.

Where Will the Photo Shoot Take Place?

For newborn babies, I hold sessions in my Brighton-based studio. Warm, quiet, and beautifully lit, it’s perfect for those soft, dreamy portraits that feel timeless that you’ll see in my collection of newborn photography in Melbourne.

We Haven't Done Maternity Photos – Did We Miss Out?

Not at all. But if you're still expecting, there's something really special about documenting both chapters. Why a maternity photo session is worth it shares my thoughts on that, and the best time to book your maternity shoot will help with timing if you're keen.

Still Have Something on Your Mind?

I love hearing from Melbourne families who are in the thick of this beautiful season. Whether you're ready to book or just starting to wonder, I'm here.

This time goes faster than anyone warns you. Let's make sure you have something to hold onto.
